The political revolution that Bernie Sanders is campaigning on is about to go international as the Democratic presidential candidate has accepted an invitation to speak at the Vatican on social, economic, and environmental issues.
Sanders said during an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe:
I was very moved by the invitation. I am a big big fan of the Pope. Obviously, there are areas where we disagree on like women’s rights or gay rights, but he has played an unbelievable role, unbelievable role of injecting a moral consequence into the economy. And here is what he is saying, you know people think Bernie Sanders is radical. Hmmumm. Read what the Pope is writing. What he is saying is that we not only have to pay attention to what he calls the dispossessed. These are the children who have no jobs. Youth unemployment around the world is off the charts. The elderly people who are watching this program now, and are trying to get by on $11,000 a year, we don’t talk about that. But you know what else he even is doing? He’s talking about the idolatry of money. The worship of money. The greed that’s out there. How our whole culture is based on I get more and more and more, and I don’t have to worry about veterans sleeping out on the streets, or elderly people who can’t afford their prescription drugs, and he’s trying to inject a sense or morality into how we do economics.
The Sanders campaign released an accompanying statement, when the Democratic presidential candidate said, “I am delighted to have been invited by the Vatican to a meeting on restoring social justice and environmental sustainability to the world economy. Pope Francis has made clear that we must overcome ‘the globalization of indifference’ in order to reduce economic inequalities, stop financial corruption and protect the natural environment. That is our challenge in the United States and in the world.”
The announcement of the speech at the Vatican was exactly the sort of tone changing news that the Sanders campaign needed. The Bernie Sanders presidential campaign did not get popular by getting mired in negativity. Bernie Sanders is at his best when is focusing on the big issues that are being left out of the political dialog.
Being invited to speak at the Vatican is a deserved honor for Sen. Sanders (I-VT). Bernie Sanders has devoted his career in public service to giving a voice to voiceless and a core belief that government should serve the people, not the special interests.
What started as a presidential campaign in the United States is set to become a global message for economic justice as the political revolution is about to go international.
